Local and state governments annually spend over $1 trillion dollars on goods and services; Multnomah County spends $300-400 million dollars annually. By implementing Sustainable Purchasing and Social Equity Policies, Jeff Cogen, Multnomah County Chair, and the Board of Commissioners are leading the way for other elected officials to implement green purchasing policies. Last month, at the 77th National Association of Counties Annual Conference Multnomah County shared it's nationally recognized policies with County Commissioners from across the country in Pittsburgh, PA.
Sophia Cavalli, Procurement and Small Business Supervisor, presented to elected officials on Multnomah County's cutting edge best practices and policies for including local Minority, Women, and Emerging Small Businesses into all types of purchases. "At Multnomah County, we believe Sustainable Purchasing and Social Equity policies are responsible business practices," she said. "Asking our vendors to do the same supports our local economy as 95% of all business in Multnomah County are small businesses. Sharing our policies on the national level supports the larger economy." NACo's 77th Annual Conference and Exposition provides an opportunity for all county leaders and staff to learn about innovative county programs and find out about issues impacting counties across the country.
