Transition Projects Inc. broke ground this week for the Clark Center Annex, which will provide 22 units of low-cost permanent housing.
The annex will be adjacent to the Clark Center, a 90-bed shelter for homeless men on the corner of Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Operated by Transition Projects and opened in 1998, the center, which is named in honor of former Mayor Bud Clark and former Multnomah County Sheriff Don Clark, has served several thousand men. It provides services including case management, mental health counseling, employment services and life skills.
The annex is a partnership between Transition Projects, the city of Portland, the Housing Authority of Portland and other public and private funding agencies.
Transition Projects also launched a campaign to ensure the affordability of the Clark Center Annex for people who need it the most. The agency increased its annual fund-raising goal by $35,000 and will begin an endowment to support the project.
A video detailing the need for the Clark Center Annex is available online at www.tprojects.org/movies/TPIProfile. wmv.
