On a cold November night in 2008, in the midst of a sea of supporters seeking to be in-person witnesses to history, then President-Elect Barack Obama said these words: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." Slightly more than a decade later, America finds itself once again at a precipice.
While many have opined that democracy itself is on the ballot, it may be more accurate to say that elections, especially those held during crises, are democracy in action. Our voice — our votes — matter. Community — the life's blood of our democracy — is essential and fundamental to the members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). For the 193 year history of the Black Press of America and the 80-year history of the NNPA, Black publishers have reported the stories of our community. In good times. In bad times. In dangerous times. In defiant times. The Black Press has informed, enlightened and empowered our community — and the world.
