YWCA Volunteers Needed
The YWCA Volunteer Orientation will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the YWCA Community Room, 3609 Main Street, Vancouver. In the event of inclement weather, the orientation backup date is Jan. 20. Several programs will offer free training for new volunteers in January and February.
The YWCA is currently seeking for its winter 2009 orientation/training cycle:
• 10 women with daytime availability to advocate for Sexual Assault victims and their families;
• 25 men and women to become Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children;
• 3 female volunteers to provide encouragement and support for women in the Clark County Jail, plus 2 to teach sewing at the County Work Center through the Women Offenders Rehabilitation, Training and Help program;
• 4 men and women to mentor youth 16-21 year of age and/or facilitate activities with the Independent Living Skills Program;
• 2 volunteers to facilitate support groups for participants in SafeChoice domestic violence program.
Other ongoing volunteer needs include helping out in the Y's Care preschool classroom, supporting social justice in the community, assisting with fund raising and special events, and working behind the scenes to keep the agency functioning smoothly.

Home Restoration Workshop
A workshop will teach you how to work around lead paint when working on older homes. The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Ave. Tickets are $18 or $13 for AHC Members.
Old house repair and remodeling often involves lead paint. This program features Barbara Zeal, program coordinator for the Oregon Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, who will show old house owners how to use lead-safe work practices when repairing, renovating or painting older homes. College Finance Help
College Goal Oregon will have financial aid experts available to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) worksheet and submit the online application at 27 sites throughout the state. In Portland, the event will be on Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at PCC Cascade.
The FAFSA determines eligibility for need-based federal, state and campus-based financial aid including the Oregon Opportunity Grant. All sites include presentations on searching and applying for private scholarships. Bilingual volunteers will also be available at most sites.
Students should bring a parent/guardian if possible; student and parent(s) most recent completed federal income tax return; current value of assets, including cash, checking, savings, investments, and value of business/farm, if any; social security numbers of student and parents or guardians; driver's license (if any); and alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen).
