Dr. Cleveland Haynes, III, PhD, the beloved son of Audrey Houston Haynes and Cleveland Haynes, Jr., was born in Portland, on Dec. 24, 1960.
He was a member of Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church until he relocated to Seattle.
Haynes was a graduate of John Adams High School, Evergreen State College and The Union Institute. He was a teacher at Middle College High School in Seattle.
In his youth he was very active and enjoyed participating in many physical activities. He loved to jog late at night, until his mother convinced him otherwise.
His mother says Haynes would always attentively listen to the opinions of others, then proceed to follow his own calling. He traveled extensively, including a trip to Brussels, Belgium to give a presentation with his aunt, Dr. Alice Vivian Houston, at the International Conference on Education.
While working on his PhD in education, Haynes was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. However, he refused to give in or give up. He tirelessly persevered until he achieved his goal of earning his doctorate.
Haynes taught full time until multiple sclerosis robbed him of his physical strength, causing him to transition to working part time, subsequently forcing him to retire from teaching. He fought a courageous battle and our family and friends learned so much from his courage and patience.
Dr. Cleveland Haynes, III, was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother Audrey Houston Haynes, sister Toni Denise Haynes and uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. He was a bright and shining star to all of us. We will miss him and hold his smile in our hearts always.
Services were held on Jan. 26, at Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church. Arrangements were by Cox & Cox Funeral Chapel.
