The Seattle City Council today launched a new website to help people cope with the current economic crisis (http://seattle.gov/council/econ_center.htm). Recession Resources for Seattle Residents offers links to a variety of informational sites and resources for those seeking job training, debt assistance, help with housing issues, and health care.
This new service is designed to help people hold their ground in what looks to be a continued stretch of difficult financial times.  "Our goal is to make it easier for Seattle residents to find the help they need, and find it quickly," Council President Richard Conlin said.
"Hopefully, these resources will make what is a difficult time for many people just a little less stressful."
The Council committed to getting this informational resource online as one of the elements of its Economic Recovery Plan embodied in resolution 31135. The complete list of topics that users will find assistance with includes foreclosures, home purchasing, safeguarding savings and retirement funds, debt service, job search and training, child care and food assistance, health care, and utility bill payer assistance. The Council site essentially makes existing resources more accessible in one location.
"We know that people are hurting," said Conlin, "and we're determined to provide the greatest possible service to our constituents, especially during this difficult time."
Archives of previous meetings, news releases and copies of legislation are available on the Council's website at www.seattle.gov/council.
Council meetings are cablecast live on Seattle Channel 21 and webcast live at www.seattlechannel.org/viewer_live.asp.  Questions about Council news releases can be directed to Debra Carnes, Council Communications, at 206-684-8159, or by e-mail at [email protected]

Public comment sought on King County budget and policy priorities

Affordable Summer Dance Classes For Boys And Girls in the Local Community and Beyond
My World Dance and Fitness Studio, a community-focused dance and fitness studio,  will be offering affordable dance classes for children ages 3 – 8 years old, July 11 – August 22, 2009.  Classes for youth ages 9 and older will be added as interest is expressed.
The classes  — pre-ballet, ballet, and jazz – will be offered to 3-5 year olds (pre-ballet and jazz) and 6 – 8 year olds (ballet and jazz), every Saturday morning beginning July 11th through August 22nd,, with an open house and performance on August 23, 2009.   Students may register for one or two classes per week for the seven-week session.  The expanded Fall session will begin September 12, 2009.
At the recent My World Dance and Fitness Open House that concluded the Spring dance class session, parents, relatives, and family friends were able to enjoy the young dancers perform in a recital alongside their instructors.  It is from the feedback and interest generated at the recital that MWDF decided to have a children's summer dance program.
My World Dance and Fitness Studio is a new, state-of-the-art, dance and fitness studio in the Artspace Hiawatha Loft Building at 849 Hiawatha Place South, Seattle.  The studio offers a daily sampling of dance and fitness classes from around the world such as belly dancing, tai chi, yoga, and salsa.    The pounding beat of live drumming draws observers who become students of Dora Oliveira's Afro-Brazilian Samba. The hip, the hop, and the jive infuse dancers with the syncopated rhythms of Pam Johnson's Swing Dance class. And "Sweatin' to the Oldies" is old news compared to Suzanne Simmons' Funk Aerobics.
Information about class descriptions, registrations, fee information, and additional class offerings is available by visiting our website www.myworld-df.com or by calling (206) 861-2500.
