Protest
Human Rights Commission of Portland

Letters to the editor, The Skanner

415 N. Killingworth St. Portland, OR 97217

Dear Editors:

On behalf of the Human Rights Commission of Portland (HRC), we would like to thank The Skanner for following the recent protest conducted by the White Genocide Project, an emerging hate group committed to misleading residents of our community.

As you may know, the continued growth of Portland’s ethnically diverse communities has jolted area social justice organizations, government entities, and leaders into a state of discourse and action. Unfortunately, the harmful action taken by a few disgruntled detractors has not always been exemplary of the ideal commitment to diversity as we all would hope.

Following your article, we reached out to IRCO’s leadership team, Tauch Sokhom and Margaret Malarkey to express our support of the organization’s service to our fellow community members. Without IRCO, thousands of new community members would not have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Following our correspondence to you, my fellow Human Rights Commissioners and I are positioned to denounce the action taken by the White Genocide Project, as well as usher in the immediate opportunity to invite them to foster greater understanding by learning about the positive promise that diversity offers us all.

We hope that The Skanner will continue to be a beacon for information such as that provided in the IRCO article and we are grateful for your presence in our community.

Appreciatively,

Sonji R. Young, Chair

Linda McKim-Bell, Vice Chair
